COBRAM VICTORY FC - HISTORY

HISTORY

Cobram Victory first had a senior team back in 2001 when they gained entry to the Albury Wodonga soccer association as Murray Border Cobram United soccer club. Under now president Tony Startari they were quick to appoint a coach and sign some key players with Joseph Artavilla appointed the inurgual coach along with NESL stars Pino and Alex Artavilla to add some experience to the young outfit that was just coming out of the under 17 competition. Michael and Chris Startari along with Nazz Santoro all started for MBCU in there first ever match while a young Stefan Diaco was on the bench and all will be taking part in the match on Sunday. Not much was expected from the young Cobram side but the young team put in some great performances and finished the season 6th in the 13 team competition coming up against Albury Hotspurs in the first final narrowly going down one nil. The next couple of seasons were the hardest in the clubs history after losing some key experienced players and losing some other key players to injury the teams coached by Phil Muscara (2002) and Rock Dirretto and Dom Tedesco (2003) it was a real rebuilding time for the club giving all there young players some much needed senior experience and leading the club in the direction it is today. In 2004 the club opted for an outside coach and appointed Wangaratta hero John Antonello who brought with him Mario and Phil Antonello, Michael Sacco, Matt Vicaro and Dan Markham to produce the strongest team the club had ever had till that time along with a strong core of talented local the boys won there first eleven matchs and were flying until an injury crisis hit the club mid season and there form seemed to dip too. But come finals the boys manages to turn it on again winning there first final 2-1 against Albury City thanks to a Manny Artavilla sealing penalty before playing off against Lavington Panthers in the preliminary final and after Artavilla gave MBCU the first half lead the boys ran out of legs in the second half going down three one. That was clubs best finals finish up until this season and gave the club great hope going into the future. The following two seasons under the guideance of Frank Diaco (2005) and Matt D’Agostino (2006) the club opted for just local players with a great crop of young 16 year olds coming through to top up the already young list. The boys played some very exciting soccer over those two seasons but just lacked the consistency to do it week in week out but gained respect from many people during their journey for the exciting brand off soccer they were producing playing in the finals both seasons just going down to powerhouse Albury United on both occasions. By 2007 the club joined the North Eastern soccer league and also changed its whole image with its change of scenery, changing its name to Cobram Victory FC. After appointing Daniel Yarnley as coach the still young team needed some experience to help them in the new league and found gold with the signing of Frank Bazzano and Seb Fichera who fitted straight into the line up and the team produced some great wins escepially against both powerhouse Griffith teams but the boys just missed out on finals action but were determined to get it right for season 2008.
